FAU Overtakes JSU 5-2

Florida Atlantic University (31-20, 11-11 TAAC) used a Rusty Brown home run to gain the lead against Jacksonville State University (11-33, 3-19 TAAC) before winning 5-2 in the conference series opener.
After JSU took a 1-0 lead in the first, Brown hit a home run, his third of the season, in the fourth inning to score Alex Fernandez and put FAU ahead 2-1.
Florida Atlantic again scored in the fifth after Joey Schifflet walked Gabe Somarriba and LJ Biernbaum and Alex Fernandez hit an RBI single to score Somarriba from second and go ahead 3-1.
JSU was able to gain back one run in the bottom of the inning after Petersen Benjamin gave up two singles to put runners on first and third. With two outs, Carlos Delgado reached first on an error by Bobby Spano and Michael Helms scored from third for the Gamecocks.
After Schifflet hit two batters and walked a batter in the sixth, Gabe Somarriba hit a single through the right side to score the final two runs for FAU and the 5-2 win.
Peterson Benjamin pitched 8 1/3 innings for FAU while striking out six, walking two and giving up one earned run. Chris Della Rocco came in out of the pen to earn his first save of the season.
Schiflett took the loss for JSU and moves to 2-5.
Florida Atlantic plays a doubleheader at Jacksonville State at 1 pm today.
