For the second time in as many nights, Florida Atlantic University came from behind to defeat a top-25 team. Wednesday night, it was no. 20 East Carolina's turn to face an FAU rally as the Owls scored seven runs in the fifth inning on their way to a 9-8 victory. FAU (16-8) fell behind 7-2 heading into the fifth before plating seven runs with two outs and no one on in the bottom of the inning.
Alex Fernandez went 2-for-5 with three RBIs while Mike Valdes had three hits along with two runs and an RBI.
FAU led 2-0 after three before ECU (17-3) scored four runs in the fourth and came back with three more in the fifth to take a 7-2 lead. Jason Sullivan's two-run two-out single in the fifth capped off the FAU rally and gave the Owls a 9-7 lead after five.
ECU scored a run in the eighth before FAU's James Callahan shut the door on the Pirates and picked up his first save of the season. Matt O'Brien (1-0) picked up the win with three innings of work, allowing one run on six hits. ECU outhit FAU 13-9.
FAU next faces Central Florida Saturday in Orlando in the first of a three-game set which opens Trans America Athletic Conference play.
