ORLANDO, FL -
A strong pitching performance and a four-run second inning proved to be the difference in Florida Atlantic University's 6-0 loss to Trans America Athletic Conference rival Central Florida Saturday night in Orlando. It was the first TAAC game of the season for both teams.
UCF's Justin Pope pitched a one-hit shutout, fanning 12, walking two, and allowing just a two-out seventh inning single to FAU's Mike Valdes.
A two-out three-run homer by Mike Fox started the scoring for no. 12 UCF in the bottom of the second. UCF added another run in the inning before plating a run in the fourth and fifth innings for a 6-0 lead heading into the sixth.
Meanwhile, FAU (16-9, 0-1 TAAC) was being dominated at the plate as Pope retired the first 13 batters he faced before a one-out walk to Regan Samaniego in the fifth inning. Pope's no-hit attempt was then broken up by Valdes two innings later.
UCF (20-4, 1-0 TAAC) outhit FAU 8-1. Both teams conclude their three-game series Sunday with a 1:00pm doubleheader.
