Owls Impress at ITA All-American Championships

STONE MOUNTAIN, GA -
Florida Atlantic University's Martin Jirak was defeated Monday morning in the prequalifying final round of the ITA All-American Championships in Stone Mountain, GA. The senior fell to Wisconsin's Alexander Kasarov, 6-3, 6-3. Jirak had won four matches in three days to advance to Monday's showdown. He was making a bid to advance to the championship's 64-player qualifying round.
Jirak opened play Friday with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Marquette's Raj Gill before defeating Tony Mule of UNC-Greensboro 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Jirak followed with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Virginia Tech's Andreas Lauland on Saturday before ousting Zlatko Stupausky (South Alabama) on Sunday, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
Jirak was one of five FAU men's tennis players to take part in the annual competition that features the top NCAA Division I players. Doug Devriendt defeated Gabe Coren (San Diego State) 6-2, 6-2 and Eduardo Pacheco (Arkansas) 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 before falling in the third round. In other Owls' action, Derrick Nguyen (UCLA) d. Andre Buzzoni (FAU) 6-2, 7-6, Ben Cox (Michigan) d. Sandro Spotti (FAU) 6-1, 7-6, and Trevor Wilson (Georgia Tech) d. Cristian Paiz (FAU) 3-1, ret. All were first round matches.
In doubles action, FAU's team of Buzzoni and Spotti fell to Aleksey Bubis/Oggie Kolev (Arkansas) 8-1.
