What the Florida Atlantic volleyball team (8-12, 5-2 A-Sun) thought was a win in four games turned out to be a loss in five to Atlantic Sun opponent Campbell University (12-6, 4-2 A-Sun) as the Lady Owls lost to the Camels for the first time since 1994.
After taking a time out with the score 32-31 in game four, the Lady Owls took the floor and resumed play. The time on the clock expired and the buzzer interrupted play, but the players continued as the whistle was not blown. Lady Owls won the point and the match. Or so they thought. After discussing the situation it was decided to replay the point and the rest is history as FAU fell in five.
Florida Atlantic jumped out early and won the first two games against a struggling Campbell offense and a strong FAU block, which had a season-high 17 blocks on the night. Game three saw the two teams battle back and forth and tie the score 14 times before two FAU attacking errors and a kill by Campbell's Jordan Rasmussen put the game away.
The Owls never regained their composure and after the bizarre call in game four were disoriented and fell to Campbell 30-24, 30-22, 27-30, 31-33, 13-15.
Ashley Bodily had a season-high 23 kills and 20 digs in the defeat to lead FAU. She now needs 19 kills to reach the 1000 kill mark in her career.
Crystal Brim, Abby Jenkins, and Kara Lewis all recorded double-doubles for the Camels in the win.
FAU will play another conference match this evening as they host Georgia State. Georgia State suffered a loss last night as they fell to the University of Central Florida in four games.
