BOCA RATON, FL -
A dramatic second half comeback by Florida Atlantic University was not enough as the Lady Owls fell to Campbell University 70-67 Thursday night in a Trans America Athletic Conference battle in Boca Raton, FL. FAU erased a 12-point deficit midway through the second half and had a chance to tie the contest on the game's final possession.
The loss drops FAU to 4-13 overall and 1-7 in the TAAC. With the victory, the Lady Camels improved to 12-4 overall and 8-0 in the TAAC. It was Campbell's 15th consecutive victory over a TAAC opponent dating back to last season. Tamala Vaughn led FAU with 22 points which draws her within 12 points of reaching 1,000 for her career. Campbell's Sara Moore led all scorers with 23 points.
"Tonight's game was very encouraging," said FAU head coach Chancellor Dugan on her team's performance coming off a disappointing loss at Jacksonville five days earlier. "It shows me that we have great senior leadership and that we have heart."
FAU, which played with intensity the entire game, opened the game leading 22-11 with 10:34 left in the first half. DeeAnna Hanscom's lay-up gave FAU what would be their largest lead of the evening. Campbell countered with a 9-1 run that was capped off by two April Cromartie free throws with 5:24 left in the half. The first half ended with the game tied at 29.
FAU opened the second half on a 7-2 run to take a 36-31 lead with 17:50 to play. Campbell then went on a 25-8 run over the next 7:24 to take their largest lead of the game, 56-44, with 10:15 left.
With 5:45 left, a Vaughn jumper completed the FAU comeback as the Lady Owls tied the game at 60 on a 16-4 run. Both teams traded points before FAU had a chance to tie the game on their final possession.
LaTorria Matthews, who finished with 17 points, missed from long range with 11 seconds left. With the rebound, Chantale Jones missed a trey with four seconds left. After a jump-ball on the rebound, Matthews missed a three-pointer at the buzzer.
"I thought offensively we did a great job down the stretch in executing," added Dugan. "We had everything we wanted in that last play."
For the game, FAU outshot Campbell 44 percent to 41 percent. The Lady Camels held a 36-31 rebounding edge and made 21-of-22 free throws while FAU went 11-of-16 from the line.
