BUIES CREEK, NC -
A late rally by Florida Atlantic University came up short as Campbell University held on for a 72-70 Trans America Athletic Conference victory Saturday afternoon in Buies Creek, NC. The loss drops FAU to 4-13 overall and 3-3 in TAAC play while the Fighting Camels improved to 4-10 and 2-4 in the TAAC. Adam Fellers led all scorers with 24 points while FAU's Earnest Crumbley finished with 23.
Campbell built its largest lead, 70-62, with 4:07 to play on a layup by Feller. The Owls managed to creep closer, holding the Camels without a field goal for the remainder of the game. A Clay Fuller layup with 2:41 left pulled FAU to within 71-68. The Owls defense held the Camels at bay while FAU failed four consecutive times to cut the three-point deficit. Finally, with 20 seconds remaining, a Daryl Dingle layup pulled FAU to within one point at 71-70.
With six seconds left, Fellers made one of two free throws to give Campbell a 72-70 lead. With time running out, Crumbley's attempt to get a shot off was thwarted when Campbell's Emory Walton knocked the ball out of his hands at the buzzer.
The first half saw both teams go back and forth as the lead changed hands more than a dozen times. A three-pointer by Jeff Cowans, who finished with 17, gave FAU a 26-24 lead with 6:36 left in the half. The Owls closed the half with a pair of treys, one by Cowans, and another by John Smart, to take a 39-32 halftime lead.
Crumbley began the second half with one of his five threes to give FAU a 42-32 lead, their largest of the game. Campbell answered with a 12-0 run over the next 2:24 to regain the lead at 44-42. The Camels built their advantage to 53-46 with 11:34 left on a dunk by Jay Carter. That's when the Owls began chipping away before Campbell responded to take the eight point lead.
Dingle also finished in double figures for the Owls with 10 points. The loss overshadowed a career-high 13 rebounds by Nick Neumann. FAU was outshot 49-percent to 36-percent while outrebounding the Fighting Camels 38-34.
