MIAMI -
It was a short wait for Florida Atlantic University's first victory of the season and it was an 86-81 precious victory over in-state foe Florida International University, Saturday afternoon in the FIU Thanksgiving Classic.
FAU spotted the tournament's host the first five points of the game. The two teams knotted at eight and again at 11 before the Owls pulled a head by as many as eight and held a three-point advantage at the half , 34-31.
FAU, led by Jeff Cowans' 21 point effort and Raheim Brown who scored 17 points and pulled down 11 rebounds en route to being named to the all-classic team, got FIU into early foul trouble and enjoyed the lead much of the game.
The second half saw the two teams tie just once at 38, before the Owls pulled away for the final time of the game. The victory improved FAU's record to 1-3 overall and marked the first time FAU captured the match-up since 1997's 91-88 victory, a game that will be remembered as one of the best ever in the FAU gymnasium.
The Owls will next travel to the University of Florida for a 7 pm, Monday game. It will mark the first time FAU has played UF.
