GAINESVILLE, FL -
Florida Atlantic University fell behind 20-4 in the first 4:50 of play as they were defeated 100-42 by the University of Florida Monday night in Gainesville. FAU dropped to 1-4 on the season as the Gators (2-0) entered the game ranked 10th nationally. Jeff Cowans led the Owls with 13 points while the Gators' Matt Bonner scored a game-high 21 points.
"I'd like to thank the University of Florida and Billy Donovan for giving us this opportunity to come out and see what big-time college basketball is all about," said FAU head coach Sidney Green. "I'm very much appreciative of it, and I'm sure we're going to take this loss, put it in our hip pocket and take it out on our next opponent."
The Gators led 57-17 at the half and built a 70-19 lead with 15:30 left in the game. With the starters on the bench for the Gators, FAU mounted a 15-3 run, which included three treys from Cowans. The freshman finished with four three-pointers in the game.
Leading 73-34 with 11:09 to play, the UF starting five returned and quickly increased the lead, eventually claiming their largest lead of 58 points with 58 seconds to play.
The Owls were outshot 47-percent to 26-percent while committing 27 turnovers compared to the Gators' 12. UF scored 40 points off of FAU turnovers.
Daryl Dingle and Robert Williams each scored six in the Owls effort. Raheim Brown, who earlier in the day was named the Trans America Athletic Conference player-of-the-week, was held to just four points.
UF's Teddy Dupay, Udonis Haslem, and Brent Wright each scored while Justin Hamilton added 12.
FAU next plays at San Diego State Thursday night at 10pm.
