BOCA RATON, FL -
For more than a half, a new-look Florida Atlantic University squad flirted with an upset as the Owls held the University of Miami at bay. However, a 13-0 run which began a game-deciding 31- 9 run ended any hopes of an Owls' upset as the visiting Hurricanes prevailed at the end, 76-59. FAU was led by freshman Clay Fuller, who scored 16 points, which included going 7-of-7 from the free throw line.
The first half featured both teams struggling to muster any kind of run. FAU took its first lead with 15:20 left in the half when Raheim Brown converted on a three-point play to make it 7-6 Owls. UM then went on a 13-5 run to lead 19-12 with 10:12 left in the first. The back-and-forth nature of the half continued as the Owls responded with a 11-4 run to tie the game at 23 with 6:40 left. UM went to the intermission with a 34-32 lead.
The second half saw the Owls dominate at first, outscoring the Hurricanes 9-2 in the first 3:23 to take a 41-36 lead with 16:37 left in the game. FAU's largest lead of the game was short-lived as UM went on a 13-0 run to take a 49-41 lead with 11:20 left. The Hurricanes continued to outscore the Owls 18-9 to take a 67-50 lead with 5:37 lead.
Brown finished with 10 points in his first action since 1998-99 at South Florida. He, along with Nick Neumann, finally got a chance to play for the Owls after sitting out last year after transferring. Neumann finished with 4. Jeff Cowans scored 10 points and hauled in nine rebounds. Junior Daryl Dingle scored eight points while grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds.
FAU next hosts Hofstra University Tuesday at 7pm.
