2006: Began spring drills with hard work and a three-way tie for the fall starting role...narrowed the race to two prior to preseason camp opening...as classes began the race was too close to call...Rusty Smith drew the season opening start, but Clayton was inserted in the second quarter as planned and he never looked back...held the starting role through the advanced training portion of the schedule...during that stretch he was 29-65-2 for 316 yards and 1 TD...also had 20 carries for 58 yards...as a starter he was 64-128-5 for 774 yards and five TDs prior to suffering a concussion in the Middle Tennessee game that limited his time the remainder of the season...on the year he was 78-154-6 for 926 yards and five TDs...recorded a TD pass against South Carolina, Louisiana-Monroe, Southern Utah (2) and Arkansas State...experienced the power of hushing a crowd following a 47-yard run and a 25-yard touchdown pass on the very next play at South Carolina...was three and six on the season as a starter.
spot and then capitalized on his first start with a 26-23 victory over the reigning Sun Belt champion...had his career-best game completing 13 of 22 passes attempted for 151 yards and one score...also scrambled for 20 yards, including a 15-yard run...returned the following week to guide the Owls against intra-state rival FIU only to come up on the short end with three interceptions and just 82 passing yards...ended the season with a passing efficiency of 98.13...completed 31 passes in 57 attempts and threw three interceptions...totaled 329 yards for an average of 36.6 per game.

High School: Named to PrepStar[apos]s All-Midwest Team...first-team Division II all-state selection by the Associated Press...earned first-team All-Northeast Ohio and All-Quad County honors as a senior...Northeast Ohio Division III Offensive Player of the Year, completing 146-of-216 throws (.676) for 1,937 yards, 19 touchdowns and four interceptions in 2002...threw for a school-record 319 yards versus Chaney...rushed for 558 yards and eight TDs as a senior...produced 2,495 total yards and 27 total TDs in 2002...elected team captain prior to his senior season...two-year starter for Coach Paul Hulea at Poland (Ohio) Seminary High School...earned second-team all-state honors as a junior...selected first-team All-Northeast Ohio, All-Quad County and All-Metro Athletic Conference (MAC in 2001)...completed 291-of-428 career passes (.680) for 3,773 yards, 33 TDs and 11 INTs...ran for 706 career yards and 10 scores...accounted for 4,629 total yards and 43 TDs during his prep career...runs 4.7 in the 40...three-sport athlete (football, baseball and basketball).
Personal: Interdisciplinary studies Social Sciences major...son of Tim and Viive Clayton...born Aug. 25, 1984...nephew of John Sontich who played freshman and JV football at Dartmouth (defensive back, 1979-81).
