Bob Deutschman came to Florida Atlantic University in the fall of 1998. He joined the staff full-time in the fall of 2000 after splitting the time his first two seasons with FAU and as a local school teacher.
Deutschman stepped into the role that had previously fallen under Head Coach Kevin Cooney[apos]s umbrella. In his first season, the pitching staff was among the nation[apos]s top three in ERA the entire season, ending no. 2. Proving it wasn[apos]t first year luck, the staff[apos]s starters sported a 31-7 record and a 3.03 ERA. In 1999, Todd Moser led the nation in victories and win percentage at 15-1 and was named an All-American by every baseball publication. junior Petersen Benjamin ended 2000 with 12-1 mark.
Upon Deutschman[apos]s hiring, Cooney said, [quote]I have been the pitching coach for my team since 1975. Giving that responsibility to Bob reflects the confidence I have in his ability to develop our pitchers to their fullest extent.[quote]
That confidence paid off for FAU. Under Deutschman[apos]s direction, FAU finished second nationally in ERA 3.10. Todd Moser led the nation in the victories and win percentage at 15-1 and was named an All-American by every baseball publication. Junior Petersen Benjamin ended 2000 with a 12-1 mark, and was then named to the 2000 Collegiate Baseball Magazine Pre-Season All-American Team.
In his first year as a full-time assistant in 2001, he had a big assignment as only one starting pitcher returned. He had the task of molding four freshmen and four transfers into an experienced staff quickly. The Blue Wave solidified two starting positions but the third position fluctuated during the season as injuries plagued several of the potential starters. Even though they were an inexperienced squad, the team managed to post a 4.60 ERA against some tough competition, including 14 games against ranked opponents.
Deutschman came to FAU after serving as pitching coach/recruiter at Nova Southeastern University from 1991 to 1997. He also served as an associate scout for the Colorado Rockies from 1993 to 1997.
Prior to Nova he served as the pitching coach/third base coach for the Newark Bardge Bandits, a Class A Independent team in Altoona, PA from October 1997 to 1999. Deutschman also served as an associate scout for the Kansas City Royals and as the Class A Manager for the Huntington Rail Kings in Huntington, WV. Deutschman earned his degree from Nova Southeastern University in May 1991.
