Freshman (2009): Impressed as a true freshman... crafty left-handed pitcher who was promoted to FAU[apos]s No. 2 Saturday position in starting rotation by season[apos]s end... his first 15 collegiate appearances came out of the bullpen -- 10 of those first 15 relief appearances were scoreless... had a 2.84 ERA as a reliever after throwing a spotless 2/3 innings at No. 7 Miami (4/7)...tossed a pair of scoreless innings in FAU[apos]s season-opening series versus Fordham (2/21)...fanned three in extended relief appearance against Lehigh (3/3)... helped FAU knock off Louisiana-Lafayette (3/13) in league road series...won his first game after 1 1/3 innings of relief in FAU[apos]s 11-5 win over Bethune-Cookman (4/15)...made his first start three days later in the second game of a double-header against Bryant (4/18)...was fantastic in his next two appearances, limiting Western Kentucky (4/26) to one run in four-plus innings of long-relief and then beating New Orleans (5/2) in a must-win game at FAU Stadium, striking out a career-high five hitters in eight complete innings, cementing him in the weekend rotation for the remainder of the season.
High School: Turned in a phenomenal senior season at South Miami Senior High School...tossed seven complete games during a 9-1 season with 0.98 ERA...earned first team 6A-5A all-state honors as pitcher by the Miami Herald...also a 6A first team all-state pick by the Florida Sports Writers Association, one of just four pitchers in the state to earn the honor.
Personal: Economics major...born in Havana, Cuba...son of Garcia Gustavo and Noda Ivonne...became a U.S. citizen during July 4th break last summer.
