IRVING, Texas – Following a shutout victory last Thursday against South Florida, two members of the Florida Atlantic women's soccer team earned weekly recognition on Monday from the American Conference.
Midfielder
Lola Hathorne is now a four-time weekly honoree, and for the third time, has been named American Freshman of the Week. Goalkeeper
Lily Holden garners her first conference recognition as she was chosen Honorable Mention. The pair was among the offensive and defensive stars of the 3-0 win over USF.
"We had a good performance Thursday against USF, and I'm happy to see two of our players receive recognition," said Head Coach
Patrick Baker. "Lola had a goal and assist and displayed her qualities throughout the game. Lily did well throughout the game with her handling and starting our build, and also kept a clean sheet, which was important."
Hathorne once again played a vital role in an Owls' win. She provided the assist on the first (and eventual game-winning) goal, just 2:02 into the match. Three minutes later, at the 5:05 mark, she capitalized on a breakaway to score a goal herself and double the lead. Just 13 matches into her young career, Hathorne has four goals and a team-leading four assists.
"I'm extremely grateful for this recognition – all glory to God," said Hathorne. "This was only possible through the hard work my teammates put in every day. I'm excited for all we have to show the rest of the season."
Holden was the back wall behind a fantastic defensive line in the Owls' first league shutout in nearly two years. She recorded six total saves in her first full collegiate clean sheet, against 12 USF total shot attempts. The sophomore keeper is 3-1-1 in the net with an .879 save percentage this season.
"Going into the USF game, we knew it was going to mean a lot and we needed to get three points," said Holden. "Scoring first and keeping a shutout were two key points emphasized right before the game. Throughout the game, the backline made my job pretty easy, so thanks to them as well. We're super happy with the result and can't wait for the second half of conference play."
The Owls' American weekly honorees this season, nine in total, are as follows:
FAU heads out onto the road for two league matchups this week: Thursday at North Texas and Sunday at Tulsa. The team's next match on its home pitch is Thursday, Oct. 15, hosting East Carolina.
