WICHITA, Kan. – Florida Atlantic baseball (27-23, 12-11) outlasted Wichita State (26-25, 10-13) 9-7 on Saturday afternoon in Kansas. The Owls have won five consecutive weekend conference series. They are in sole possession of fifth place in the American Conference standings, just one game out of a three-way tie for second.
THE BEGINNING
The Owls opened the scoring with a four-run second inning. After
John Martinez doubled and
Patrick Ward singled to start the frame,
Kyle Boylston's third home run of the year ricocheted off the scoreboard in left field.
Michael Perazza added the fourth run on a sacrifice fly.
FAU starter
Kide Adetuyi pitched around trouble in each of the first three innings, but it caught up to him in the fourth. After the first three Shocker hitters reached base, Jaden Gustafson connected for a grand slam to tie the game, 4-4. Adetuyi departed, and Wichita State tagged
Tyler Murphy for two more runs in the inning, both unearned, to lead 6-4.
THE TURNING POINT
The Owls drew one closer in the sixth. Boylston was hit by a pitch, stole second, and scored on a sharply hit ball by
Brando Leroux that caromed off the third baseman's glove into left field. They tied the game in the next inning on a base hit by
Xavier Moronta that drove in Perazza.
Wichita State got two quick outs in the eighth before the inning got away from the Shockers.
Marshall Lipsey reached on an infield single. Lipsey tried to steal second base and was originally called out to end the inning. But the Owls challenged, and the call was overturned to safe.
Nick Romano eventually drew a walk, and Lipsey moved 90 feet closer when ball four got by the catcher. Lipsey then scored the go-ahead run on another ball four-wild pitch to Perazza.
Moronta later drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 8-6, and the final run of the frame came across on yet another wild pitch, allowing Perazza to score. When the dust finally settled, the Owls recorded just one hit in the inning while drawing four walks and benefitting from three wild pitches, all occurred with two outs.
THE FINISH
Wichita State scored a run in the bottom of the eighth before
Carson Kimball came on and recorded the final six outs, including a perfect ninth inning, to secure the 9-7 victory.
