BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic women's tennis team traveled to Miami on Saturday morning to record a 4-1 victory over host Florida International.
It is just the third time the closest team to the beach (FAU) has defeated FIU and the first time the Owls have defeated the Panthers in Miami in 14 opportunities. It marks the second time in as many years that FAU has come away with the 4-1 win. Florida Atlantic moves to 8-8 on the season while FIU dropped to 9-10.
THE BEGINNING
The Owls were successful earning the match's first point, the doubles point, over their South Florida foe. Malwina Rowinska and Maya Shanok, recent Owlspy W.I.N.G. Award winners for their community service, were not as giving to the Panthers, earning a 6-3 court #3 victory. The freshman duo of Malika Amirgaliyeva and Alexia Patru then clinched the doubles point for FAU with a 6-2 court #2 victory. On court #1, the duo of Panna Bartha and Katrin Pavkova, ranked No. 61 nationally, were tied at 5-5 with FIU's top pair when the match was abandoned for singles play.
THE MIDDLE
FAU used a 6-3, 7-5 Rowinska victory on court #2 to push the lead to 2-0, but a court #5 loss halved that lead at 2-1. Pavkova used a 6-4, 6-2 win to put the Owls back up by two and within one of a clinch at 3-1.
THE FINALE
With courts #1, #4, and #6 still in play, the match winner was still up for grabs. Courts #1 and #4 moved into a third set, while senior Shanok won a three-setter 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 of her own to clinch the match for FAU while the remaining two were abandoned.
