BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic men's tennis team jumped out on top and battled through three lead changes, but Memphis had the forth and final change for the 4-3 Sunday match.
With the loss, the Owls fall to 7-10 on the year, while Memphis, ranked No. 54 nationally, improves to 8-10 on the season. The match was the fifth in eight days for FAU and fourth versus a top-75 team, and that stretch also included a road contest in Tampa.
THE BEGINNING
FAU began Sunday's match with rapid success, taking courts #1 and #3, and the Owls were close to a third win, holding the edge in the tiebreaker on court two. As the two teams moved into singles play, the teams proved to be evenly matched. Memphis captured singles court #6 to level the score at 1-1.
THE MIDDLE
FAU sophomore
Marek Pazdera won court two in straight sets at 6-3, 6-3 to put the Owls up once more, but the lead would be shortly lived with the Tigers taking court #3 moments later to even the match a second time, now at 2-2. Three matches, court #1, #4, and #5, were still in progress, and all were well into the third set.
THE FINISH
Lucca Pignaton pushed FAU back on top with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 court #5 win. Holding a 3-2 lead with courts #1 and 3 in play and the match still up for grabs. The Owls dropped court #1 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, allowing the Tigers to climb back into the match at 3-3 and a 4-0 third set lead on court #4. That match eventually fell in favor of Memphis, giving the Tigers a 4-3 win.
