BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic baseball (14-10, 1-2) dropped the series finale to UTSA (17-7, 2-1) on Sunday by an 18-8 final in seven innings.
THE BEGINNING
The teams traded the lead back and forth through the first four innings. UTSA tagged FAU freshman starter Garrett Grant for two runs in the first inning before the Owls' offense responded in the second. John Martinez led off with a home run and, after an Eli Small single and a Patrick Ward double, Brando Leroux tied the game with an RBI groundout. With two outs, Marshall Lipsey beat out a ground ball to short, allowing Ward to score the go-ahead run.
THE TURNING POINT
Leading 4-3 after four innings, UTSA broke the game open with six runs in the fifth. A two-run homer from Jacob Silva sparked the big inning. On in relief of Grant, Tyler Murphy struck out the next batter, but a dropped third strike and a throwing error by catcher Ian Collier kept the inning at no outs. Despite not recording another hit in the inning, UTSA sent a total of 10 batters to the plate and scored four more runs to lead 10-3.
The Owls responded with four runs of their own in the bottom of the frame, highlighted by a three-run homer off the bat of Ward. The Roadrunners would pull away for good with seven more runs in the sixth. This time, they did it with seven hits, another Owls' error, and a hit-by-pitch.
THE FINISH
With the run-rule in play, Marshall Lipsey's solo home run in the bottom of the sixth brought the Owls back within nine at 17-8 before UTSA added one more in the seventh and held the Owls off the board in the ensuing half-inning to end the contest in seven.
QUOTABLE
Head Coach John McCormack
We knew going in, you can't give them extra outs, and you have to make quality pitches. For the last two days, we did that, but today it got away from us. Defensively, we weren't good. We've got to regroup and be ready for Tuesday.
