WICHITA, Kan. — Late game heroics from
Erin Rodgers earned the Florida Atlantic women's basketball team a hard-fought 79-77 overtime road win over the Wichita State Shockers on Tuesday inside Charles Koch Arena.
With their second straight American Conference win, the Owls improve to 11-13 on the season and 5-7 in league play, while the Shockers drop to 5-20 overall and 2-10 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Owls and Shockers kept each other scoreless for nearly two minutes before sharp-shooter
Grace Carstensen knocked down a three to begin scoring. Wichita State answered right back with a layup of its own, leading to both teams trading baskets and the Owls holding a one-point lead, 9-8, at the first media timeout. After a scoring drought spanning almost two-and-a-half minutes, Wichita State ended the opening frame on a 7-0 run, holding a 17-13 lead after the first.
Michiyah Simmons opened the second quarter with her first triple of the game followed by a
Vivian Onugha layup to give the Owls the lead right back at 18-17. Both teams traded leads before FAU connected on back-to-back baskets to take a three-point advantage, 24-21, at the second quarter media break. Both teams struggled finding the bottom of the net for much of the remainder of the quarter before a
Madi Gewirtz jumper sent the Owls into halftime up by three, 31-28.
After a slow start to begin the second half,
Haley Walker converted on an and-one layup keep their lead at three. Both teams continued to earn trips to the free throw line, with Gewirtz finishing FAU's second and-1 of the quarter, extending the lead to four, 41-37 at the timeout. In the last 2:30 of the quarter, FAU got to the free throw line three times, connecting on five of their six attempts to take a 50-46 lead into the final quarter.
Both teams struggled to score to start the fourth but a
Destyne Jackson trip to the free throw line gave FAU its first points of the quarter. The Shockers started to find a rhythm offensively, connecting on seven of their last eight field goals to regain the lead, 65-62 with 1:39 to play. With the Owls needing a basket, Rodgers came through, tying the game at 65 with just over a minute to play. Wichita State responded but
Jess Moors answered right back, typing the game off a reverse layup to force overtime.
The Shockers opened overtime scoring back-to-back buckets before a Gewirtz layup trimmed FAU's deficit to two. After two missed Wichita State free throws, a Rodgers jumper regained the lead for the Owls. After the Shockers tied the game at 74, Rodgers came in clutch again with an and-one layup to put the Owls up three. With the game tied up at 77, Rodgers for the third time connected on a jumper to put the Owls up two with 1.7 seconds remaining. A desperation three-point heave by the Shockers was denied with a Rodgers block to close the door shut.
