BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic women's basketball team picked up its third-straight win, earning a 61-55 victory over Tulsa in the Owls' Play4Kay pink game at Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena on Saturday.
The Owls improve to 12-13 on the season and 6-7 in American play, while Tulsa falls to 16-9 overall and 8-5 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Neither side could get a shot to fall over the first three minutes of play, before
Jess Moors broke the drought by drawing a foul and getting the Owls on the board with a free throw. Tulsa then answered on a 7-2 run to hold a 7-3 advantage at the opening media timeout. The Owls responded with five unanswered points off a pair of buckets from
Erin Rodgers and
Destyne Jackson, as well as a Jackson free throw to retake the lead 8-7 with 1:49 to go in the first. However, Tulsa closed the quarter on a 4-0 run to take the 11-8 first-quarter advantage.
The Golden Hurricane extended its lead to nine, 17-8, with a 6-0 run for their largest lead of the contest. FAU's
Erin Rodgers responded with back-to-back buckets for the Owls to cut into that lead.
Grace Carstensen, Jackson, and
Madi Gewirtz connected on back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers to cap off a 16-1 Owl run as FAU retook the lead and held a six-point advantage at 24-18 with 3:19 to go in the first half.
Vivian Onugha sank a basket just before the half to go into the intermission with her Owls leading 26-22.
Onugha continued her momentum, scoring back-to-back buckets to open the third and extended the Owls' lead to eight, 30-22. The Golden Hurricane scored four unanswered to make it a one-possession game at the 5:06-minute mark of the third, 34-31. However, two buckets from Jackson and one from Rodgers pushed the Owls' advantage to nine, 40-31, with 3:35 remaining in the third. The Owls maintained a seven-point lead through a transition bucket from Onugha, 45-38, with 34 seconds to play in the third. However, the Golden Hurricane cut the Owls' advantage to four, 45-41, courtesy of a buzzer-beating 3-pointer entering the final 10 minutes of play.
Tulsa scored first to open the fourth, cutting the FAU lead to 45-43. The Golden Hurricane kept things within two, however, Jackson knocked down her third trey of the day to open up an Owl run. Tulsa then cut the Owls' lead to just one at 56-55, with 1:37 remaining. Moors went coast to coast for the layup and held Tulsa scoreless, while hitting a trio of free throws to close out the game with a 61-55 win.
