ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Florida Atlantic volleyball team wrapped up the Michigan Invitational on Saturday as the Owls earned their fifth sweep of the season, defeating the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles, 3-0, at the Crisler Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Southern Indiana held the early lead, 5-3, but the Owls went on a 4-0 run to take their first lead of the match, 7-5. Florida Atlantic maintained a small lead through a 16-14 advantage, but a kill from
Anna Hartman sparked another 4-0 run to extend Florida Atlantic's lead to six, 20-14. The Screaming Eagles cut the lead to three, making it 21-18, but the Owls held on to take the opening set 25-20.
The Screaming Eagles struck first in the second set, but the Owls quickly retook the lead off back-to-back kills from
Madison Dyer and Hartman. The Owls extended their lead to seven, 15-8, at the second quarter media break. Florida Atlantic forced Southern Indiana to use their two timeouts at a 19-14 lead and a 22-16 advantage, before closing out the set on a block assist from
Erin Morrissey and
Maggie Allred to cap off the 25-21 set win and take the two-point advantage, 2-0.
Florida Atlantic opened the third on an 11-7 run, forcing the Screaming Eagles to call their first timeout of the set. Southern Indiana tied up the frame at 14-14, but a 3-0 Owl run, capped off by a kill from Hartman, put FAU back in front by three, 17-14, as the Screaming Eagles called their second and final timeout of the third. Southern Indiana produced a 5-3 run to cut the Owls' lead down to one, 20-19, sparking FAU's first timeout of the frame, but the Owls outscored the Screaming Eagles 5-2 to close out the set, 25-21, and clinch the straight-set sweep.
STATS & NOTES
- Hart and Hartman led the Owls offensively, scoring 13 and 10 kills, respectively. Hartman led the team with an impressive .600 hitting clip.
- Emsley Venard dished out a match-best 21 assists, while Victoria Hensley finished with 10 assists.
- Defensively, Zoe Winford and Morrisey led the Owls in digs, recording 13 and 10, respectively, while Allred tallied a match-best five blocks in the win.
- As a team, the Owls held advantages in points (49 to 42), kills (37 to 36), aces (4 to 1), blocks (8 to 5), assists (36 to 32), and digs (47 to 45).
UP NEXT
The Owls return to the Sunshine State next weekend as they prepare to compete at the UCF Invitational on Sept. 12-13 in Orlando, Fla. FAU will open the weekend on Friday, Sept. 12 with an 11 a.m. first serve against Arkansas State.
