Beard Named to Golden Spikes Award Midseason Watchlist

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic sophomore pitcher Trey Beard has been named to the Golden Spikes Award midseason watchlist, presented by Chinook Seedery, USA Baseball announced Thursday.

The Golden Spikes Award aims to identify the best amateur baseball player in the country. The list features 45 of the nation's top college and high school baseball athletes. Past winners of the award include Adley Rutschman (2019), Bryce Harper (2010), Stephen Strasburg (2009), and Buster Posey (2008).

Beard has established himself as one of the top pitchers in the country through the first seven weeks of the season. The sophomore is second in Division I in strikeouts with 62 and has recorded 10 or more Ks in five of his seven starts. He is 4-0 and sports a 2.82 ERA in 38.1 innings. The native of Dunedin, Fla., was named to the AAC All-Freshman Team in 2024.

Semifinalists for the Golden Spikes award will be announced on May 18, followed by a fan vote to determine the winner. The winner will be announced in late June in conjunction with the end of the amateur baseball season. Beard is the only representative from the American Athletic Conference on the midseason watchlist.
