MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The No. 22 Florida Atlantic softball team achieved their 20th victory of the season, defeating Middle Tennessee on Monday evening by a score of 4-3.

Four runs by the Owls (20-4) in the third inning was just enough to beat the Blue Raiders (4-12). Junior pitcher Autumn Courtney made her ninth start on the year and recorded double-digit strikeouts for the third time this season. She moves to 10-1, currently leading the American Athletic Conference in victories.

THE GAME

The top of the third inning saw the Owls capitalize on two Blue Raider errors to load the bases.
Freshman Destiny Johns, who earned a weekly honorable mention from the American Athletic Conference earlier in the day, then hit a single up the middle for two RBI, upping her total to 15 in the past four days. The 2-0 lead grew to 4-0 in the very next at-bat with a two-run double from junior Chloe Yeatts that bounced off the wall.

A two-run home run from Middle Tennessee in the bottom of the fifth closed the gap before Courtney delivered her third strikeout of the inning and 10th on the night to retire the side. After another homer in the sixth, senior pitcher Ainsley Lambert checked in and took out six batters to complete the night.

NOTES/NOTABLE

Freshman OF Bella Foran notched her 12th multi-hit game and went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate.
With two hits on the evening, redshirt sophomore outfielder Kylie Hammonds has gotten on base in 21 out of 24 games this season.
Yeatts and Johns rank one and two in team RBI at 22 and 21, respectively.
Courtney now has 78 strikeouts on the season.
Lambert leads the nation with six saves.

UP NEXT

Florida Atlantic has little time to rest, returning home to Boca Raton to play Toledo on Wednesday, Mar. 5 at 6 p.m. before the Owls host their first American Athletic Conference series of the season against Wichita State from Mar. 7 to 9, airing on ESPN+.
