CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 22 Florida Atlantic softball team recorded its third run-rule victory over the last five games, defeating Morehead State 9-0 in five innings on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, the Owls (19-4) concluded the three-day Governors Invitational with 43 runs while only allowing 11. The victory over the Eagles (1-18) was an all-around strong performance from FAU on offense and in the circle, with a career-best outing from junior pitcher
Jaden Martinez.
Redshirt sophomore outfielder
Kylie Hammonds opened the game in the leadoff spot and hit a double, her 10th time this season reaching base to start a game. Batting in the three-spot for the first time, freshman
Destiny Johns brought Hammonds home on a sacrifice fly for her 13th RBI of the weekend and a 1-0 lead.
The Owls reached base via a leadoff double for the second straight inning, this time from sophomore shortstop
Kiley Channell hitting the wall. Later in the frame, Hammonds launched her second home run of the season, a three-run shot to right field to open a 4-0 lead. In the top of the third, sophomore
Ciara Gibson added a two-run homer of her own, her second of the weekend and third this season, moving the score to 6-0.
A leadoff triple from Gibson started the top of the fifth inning that saw the Owls load the bases and score twice more. Freshman
Emilie Ching stepped up to the plate and recorded her first collegiate RBI with a bases-loaded walk that brought home classmate
Annika Segedi to cap the scoring.
Martinez made the start in the circle after pitching four strong innings in the previous game as a relief pitcher and continued her momentum with a complete-game, two-hit shutout. She fanned 11 over her five innings to improve to 3-2.
