TAMPA, Fla. – Behind four players in double figures, led by the first career double-double from sophomore
Kaleb Glenn, Florida Atlantic men's basketball beat South Florida, 69-63, Sunday to mark the first road win over the Bulls in program history.
The Owls (16-13, 8-7) pulled off the sweep of the Bulls (13-17, 7-10), after winning earlier this season in Boca Raton, 94-72. FAU led wire-to-wire in both wins this season and has now won three of four meetings since joining the American Athletic Conference.
Glenn and freshman center
Matas Vokietaitis were each inserted into the starting lineup and combined for 29 points with 18 rebounds. Florida Atlantic leaned on its frontcourt trio, as
Baba Miller's game-high 17.
Redshirt junior
Tre Carroll came off the bench for the first time in 14 games and knocked down a triple to put Florida Atlantic up 16-5. The Owls jumped out to a 19-8 lead, led by two triples from Miller before USF closed the gap to two. Florida Atlantic bounced back to grow its lead before redshirt sophomore
Niccolo Moretti sunk a step-back buzzer-beating three-pointer, putting the Owls up by nine as they entered the locker room with a 34-25 lead.
FAU was aggressive, crashing the boards early on and hauling in 28 rebounds. The Owls were spotless from the foul line in the first half, with Vokietatitis and Glenn combining for all eight
Owl scoring in the second half began the same way as the first, with a three-pointer from Miller. Junior guard
Leland Walker added another on the next possession as the duo combined for the first team's 16 points in the half.
FAU's double-digit lead returned, reaching as high as 18 thanks to an 8-0 run. The Bulls made a late charge, but two key buckets down the stretch from Glenn – a three-pointer with 3:25 to play and a layup in transition with 1:17 remaining – allowed the Owls to seal the victory.
- Glenn earned his first start as an Owl (second of his career) and recorded his first career double-double with 15 points and a season-high 10 rebounds.
- Four of the five starters scored in double figures.
- Walker has scored 10+ points in five consecutive games and has converted multiple triples in each of the last four.
- The Owls had a season-high eight blocks, led by Vokietaitis and Miller, each with three and Carroll recording two.
- FAU won the rebounding battle 45-37.
- Redshirt sophomore guard Niccolo Moretti recorded his 100th assist this season, joining teammate Walker. They are the first Owl duo since 2011-12 to each have 100+ assists in one season
