BOCA RATON, Fla. – The No. 29 Florida Atlantic women's tennis team improved to 8-0 on the season with a 4-2 win over the visiting No. 57 Charlotte 49ers on Friday evening.
While the Owls are enjoying a perfect season and are ranked No. 29 nationally, fellow American Athletic Conference member Charlotte entered the non-conference contest with a 12-2 record and ranked No. 57.
FAU used the court one duo prowess of
Malwina Rowinska and
Lara Smejkal, who improved to 8-0 on the season with a 6-2 win and combined their efforts with the court three win by
Panna Bartha and
Lexi Silna, who clinched the point with their 6-3 win.
Up 1-0 and needing just three singles victories to win the match, singles play began. Smejkal and Matthews won their courts, giving FAU a 3-0 lead before Charlotte could respond. The 49ers pulled within one with wins on courts one and four, with two still in play. FAU sophomore
Panna Bartha captured court two and clinched the victory for FAU.
Ricardo Gonzalez, FAU's Director of Tennis
"Today was a gritty performance from our girls. We played tough and found a way to get a team victory. I am pleased but not satisfied, but proud of this group for continuing to find ways to win."
