BOCA RATON, Fla. – The No. 29 Florida Atlantic women's tennis team continued its winning ways with a 6-1 victory over the visiting Boston University Terriers on Thursday morning.
The Owls, who move to 7-0 on the season, dropped the doubles point in a best-of-three format, but the court one FAU duo of Lara Smejkal and Malwina Rowinska continued to prove to be unbeatable with a 6-3 win to also move to 7-0. FAU held brief leads on doubles courts two and three but could not finish the match with tiebreaker losses on both courts to surrender the lone point to BU.
Trailing the Terriers 1-0 moving into singles play, Florida Atlantic swept each of the six courts convincingly for the 6-1 final. Smejkal's win evened the score at 1-1, while her doubles partner Rowinska gave the Owls the lead at 2-1. Senior Lexi Silna pulled FAU within one point of a clinch, and fellow senior Millie-Mae Matthews clinched the victory. At the same time, veteran Victoria Gomez O'Hayon sealed the singles sweep, winning tiebreakers in each of her two sets.
"I am pleased with the way our girls responded in singles after losing the doubles point. Our girls did a very poor job being present in doubles. This is a great learning experience for our team and we will make sure this does not happen again."
