DELAND, Fla. – The No. 25 Florida Atlantic softball team won both games played on day two of the Stetson Invitational, defeating LIU by a score of 13-8 before pulling off a 4-3 win over Marist.
For the Owls (14-2), their first win of the day came in historic fashion after facing an early 7-0 deficit. By the time Saturday afternoon rolled around, FAU had already set the single-game program record in home runs with five, three of which came in the bottom of the fifth inning, to come back against the Sharks (1-12).
In their outing against the Red Foxes (8-4), Florida Atlantic again made a comeback, taking control in the top of the fifth with both the tying and ultimately winning run.
After falling behind early on, the Owls got on the board in the bottom of the third inning with a solo shot from freshman second baseman
Destiny Johns, her second consecutive game with a home run. Back-to-back doubles from junior third baseman
Jesiana Mora and sophomore shortstop
Kiley Channell later in the frame bridged the gap to 7-2.
FAU found another three runs in the bottom of the fourth to bring the score to 8-5, first when redshirt sophomore outfielder
Kylie Hammonds drove in sophomore catcher
Corin Dammeier. An ensuing walk from freshman OF
Bella Foran loaded the bases, followed by a walk from Mora to bring in one and a hit by pitch on Channell to score another.
The non-stop home run parade began in the leadoff spot in the bottom of the fifth, with sophomore OF
Kiley Shelton launching her first as an Owl. Johns notched her second homer of the day to bring the score within one at 8-7. An RBI double from Foran tied it before the third HR of the frame came from Mora to take an 10-8 lead.
FAU was not done there, ultimately breaking the program single-game mark in the bottom of the sixth inning with sophomore
Bella Cimino coming off the bench for her first collegiate home run as part of a three-run inning to seal the 13-8 win.
It did not take long for the Owls to put runs on the scoreboard. In the top of the first, a double from Foran in the two-spot eventually led her home following a sacrifice fly from Channell. Later in the inning, Yeatts recorded an RBI single to left field to score Mora.
Making her fifth start of the season,
Jaden Martinez pitched two scoreless innings before Marist struck back with three runs in the bottom of the third. In relief, senior pitcher
Gabby Sacco took the next three frames, allowing just two hits and no runs.
In the top of the fifth inning, the duo of Yeatts and Mora came through yet again, with the former driving in the latter for the second time of the game for the tying run. Channell found her way home later on to take the 4-3 lead. Senior pitcher
Ainsley Lambert then took care of the Red Fox batters in the final inning to record her fifth save of the season.
- Florida Atlantic's 14-2 record to open the season has only been done two previous times in program history
- The Owls' record-setting day against LIU not only saw them break the team's single-game HR record at five, but their 15 hits also marked their most in a game since 2021
- Johns' two home runs against LIU tied the team's individual single-game record and put her at three in two games
- Making the start against LIU, junior pitcher Autumn Courtney reached 500 career strikeouts in the second inning
- Earning the victory, Courtney moves to seven wins on the season, tied for most in the nation
- Foran has recorded a hit in 12 out of her last 13 games and currently leads the American Athletic Conference with 24 on the season
- Mora is currently second in second in conference hits with 21. She went 5-for-6 at the plate on the day with four runs and her first HR of the season
- Serving in a pinch runner role, freshman Annika Segedi has totaled three runs, the first of her collegiate career, in four games
The Owls will take on host Stetson (10-4) in the final day of their invitational. Sunday's first pitch is set for 12:30 p.m.
