DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic men's basketball team is set for the two-day Sunshine Slam in Daytona Beach, with the Owls taking on Loyola Marymount for the first game on Monday, Nov. 24, at 8:30 p.m. and then either George Mason or Ohio on Tuesday, Nov. 25. Both games will air on CBS Sports Network.
As part of the four-team Beach Bracket, the winner of FAU (4-1) and the Lions (6-0) will face the victor of the Patriots (5-0) versus Bobcats (1-4) matchup for Tuesday's tournament championship at 7:30 p.m., with the remaining teams participating in a third-place game at 5 p.m. All games will be played at the Ocean Center.
This will mark the Owls' third November tournament in three seasons, winning the ESPN Events Invitational in 2023 at Walt Disney World and recording a victory over Oklahoma State in 2024 at the Shriners Children's Charleston Classic.
LAST TIME OUT
Florida Atlantic hosted Pacific, a member of the Sunshine Slam's Ocean Bracket, a part of a home game for the Sunshine Slam on Thursday, Nov. 20. The Owls put forth their best shooting performance of the season, going 55.8% from the field. Junior guard
Kanaan Carlyle led the way with an FAU-best 21 points.
ABOUT THE OWLS
- John Jakus is in his second season at the helm of the program. In his debut campaign in 2024-25, he was a finalist for the Joe B. Hall Award, given to the nation's top first-year head coach. Under Jakus' watch, the Owls participated in their fourth straight year of postseason play, selected to the 2025 National Invitational Tournament.
- FAU boasts eight international players. In total, the Owls are represented by seven different countries: the United States, Canada, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Senegal, and France.
- Returning for the Owls are redshirt junior guard Niccolo Moretti, redshirt sophomore guard Devin Vanterpool, and redshirt freshman guards Amar Amkou, Liam Dayco-Green, and Max Langenfeld.
- Vanterpool has had a career-best start to the season, leading the team in points per game (16.2), rebounds per game (6.4), assists per game (3.2), and steals (1.8). Against Coastal Georgia, he scored 30 points to be the first Owl to do so since Johnell Davis in January of 2024.
- The Owls welcome 10 newcomers: four true freshmen, four from the transfer portal, and two international players.
- Guard Josiah Parker was named the American Conference's Preseason Freshman of the Year.
- Florida Atlantic was ranked sixth in the American preseason coaches poll.
- FAU has tallied 18 blocks in the last two games. They average 6.6 per game, tied for 12th in the nation.
ABOUT THE LIONS
- Stan Johnson has coached the Lions for six seasons and is seeking his second straight winning campaign.
- LMU is off to a 6-0 start for just the third time in program history. They were the first team in the nation to reach six wins to start the 2025-26 season.
- Redshirt senior guard Myron Amey Jr. is the team's leading scorer at 17.5 points per game.
- As a team, the Lions are 20th in the nation in field goal percentage (.526).
- This marks the first meeting between the Owls and Lions in program history.
