BOCA RATON, Fla. – A go-ahead goal from
Ethan Schumaker in the 80th minute powered Florida Atlantic men's soccer (8-2) to a 2-1 win over Florida Gulf Coast (4-6-2) on Wednesday night. The Owls have now won four in a row overall and six in a row at the FAU Soccer Stadium.
The Owls took the lead in the ninth minute when
Matthew Alfred's cross deflected off an FGCU player for an own goal. The lead didn't last long, though, as the Eagles went straight to the other end and tied the game just 20 seconds later.
The deadlock persisted until late in the second half. With just under 10 minutes remaining,
Oliver Moller-Jensen found space for a shot just outside the FGCU penalty area. Moller-Jensen's attempt was spilled by the Eagles' keeper, and Schumaker swooped in to clean up the rebound. The junior's second goal of the season held up as the game-winner.
The Owls outshot the Eagles 9-6, with four on goal compared to two for the visitors. Goalkeeper
Alfred Mikkelsen finished with one save.
The Owls have now surpassed their win total from all of last season, won four in a row for the first time since 2013, and improved to 6-0 at home. They'll look to continue the roll on Sunday when Memphis comes to town for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
