MEMPHIS, Tenn. – After dropping the opening set, Florida Atlantic volleyball rallied to win three in a row as the Owls captured a four-set win, 3-1 (22-25, 25-17, 25-22, 25-19), at Memphis on Friday evening inside Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
The Owls improve to 15-7 on the season and 6-3 in American play, while Memphis falls to 10-14 overall and 1-8 in league play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Owls opened the match on an 11-7 run, capped off by the third kill of the day from
Olivia Hart. Memphis rallied back, tying the set at 13-13 and 14-14, but
Anna Hartman connected on her fifth kill of the opening set to push FAU back in front 15-14 at the media break. After battling through a 20-20 tie late in the opening frame, the Owls struggled to match the Tigers down the stretch as Memphis closed the first on a 5-2 run to take the opening lead, 25-22.
After an uncharacteristic opening frame, Florida Atlantic began the second on a 9-6 run. However, Memphis quickly closed the gap, after scoring four unanswered, to retake the lead 10-9 and spark the Owls' first timeout of the second. The Tigers called their first timeout of the second, trailing 14-12, but it didn't help as Memphis couldn't match FAU's offensive success, as the Owls closed the set on a dominant 11-5 run to take the 25-17 win and tie the match at one set apiece, 1-1.
The Owls opened the third on a 5-1, maintaining a four-point advantage through a 10-6 lead, as
Olivia Hart's 10th kill of the day sparked Memphis to call the first timeout of the set. The Owls continued their momentum, extending their lead to 16-8 after another kill from Hart. Memphis looked to battle back, producing an 8-1 run to cut the FAU lead to one, 17-16, forcing an Owls' timeout. The Tigers tested FAU, tying up the set at 20-20, but FAU captured the 2-1 lead after closing the third on a 5-2 run, capped off by Hart's 16th kill of the match.
FAU fell into a hole early in the fourth as Memphis scored seven unanswered points to open the frame, 7-0, sparking an early timeout from the Owls. Out of the break, FAU went on a 4-0 run to cut the deficit to three, before eventually tying things up at 9-9 after back-to-back-to-back kills from
Kierstin Bevelle. After battling through a 16-16 tie, the Owls extended their lead back to three, 19-16, after a pair of Tigers' errors and a kill from Bevelle. Memphis cut the Owls' lead to two at 20-18, but FAU closed the match on a 5-1 run, capped off by a Bevelle kill, to secure the four-set win in Memphis.
