BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic Owls wrapped up non-conference play on Saturday, earning a four-set win over the Stetson Hatters, 3-1 (25-13, 21-25, 25-21, 25-23), to capture the Owls Paradise Classic championship.
The Owls improve to 8-4 on the season, while the Hatters fall to 3-8.
Following a match-opening 9-4 Stetson run, the Owls battled back, outscoring the Hatters 14-2 to take their first lead of the contest and hold a seven-point advantage, 18-11. The two squads traded points to a 19-13 Florida Atlantic lead, however, the Owls locked in over the remainder of the set, scoring six unanswered to close out the first, 25-13.
Florida Atlantic took the early lead in the second, jumping out to a 6-2 advantage. The Hatters started chipping back away at the deficit, producing an 11-7 run to bring things back even at 13. The Owls scored four unanswered, but the Hatters responded with five straight points of their own to retake the lead, 18-17. The Hatters continued their run, outscoring the Owls 7-4 to end the second, evening up the match at one apiece, 21-25.
Stetson opened the third on an 8-3 run to spark an early Florida Atlantic timeout. The Hatters continued to maintain a three-point advantage, 14-11, before the Owls scored three unanswered, capped off by a service ace from
Romina Cornelio to even the third at 14-14. Stetson retook the lead, holding a two-point advantage at 19-17. The Owls responded, scoring five unanswered to retake the lead at 22-19. Stetson got two back to close back within one, 22-21, but the Owls went on a 3-0 run to close out the set, 25-21, taking a 2-1 match lead.
The Owls took the early lead in the fourth, opening the set on a 7-3 run to spark a Stetson timeout. The Hatters then went on a 9-1 run to retake the lead and hold a four-point advantage, 12-8. Stetson maintained a five-point lead at 15-10, however, the Owls scored six unanswered to battle back and retake the lead, 16-15. Stetson scored back-to-back points to once again flip the lead to 17-16, but another 6-0 run for the Owls pushed Florida Atlantic back out in front, 22-17. The Hatters attempted to rally, going on a 6-2 run to close back within one, but
Valeria Rosado closed out the match for the Owls, recording the match-winning kill to seal the 3-1 victory, 25-23.
- The Owls finished the weekend 3-0, capturing the Owls Paradise Classic Championship.
- Katelynn Robine and Madison Dyer were named to the Owls Paradise Classic All-Tournament Team. Robine received MVP honors.
- Four Owls record double-figure kills in the match with Valeria Rosado leading the way with a match-high 15.
- Robine, Natalie Depaula, and Madison Dyer also scored in double-figures, recording 13, 12, and 11 kills, respectively. Dyer also led the Owls in blocks, tallying a team-leading six.
- Victoria Hensley had a great day, dishing out a match-high 51 assists for the Owls.
- Olivia Hart led the Owls' back row, tying for a match-high 13 digs.
The Owls now set their sights on their American Athletic Conference opener on Friday, Sept. 27, as they host the East Carolina Pirates. First serve is set for 6 p.m. inside Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena and on ESPN+.
