BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic Owls battled tough against the No. 21 team in the nation, but came up just short on Friday, falling in three sets to the Florida State Seminoles.
The Owls fall to 5-3, while Florida State moves to 6-1 following Friday's match.
Florida State took the early lead off a 6-2 run to open the match. The Owls battled back, scoring four unanswered to tie things up at six. The Owls battled to take the lead Florida at 9-8 after a kill from
Valeria Rosado to spark a Florida State timeout. The Owls maintained a 10-9 advantage, but Florida State rallied on a 7-1 run to retake the lead 16-11 as the Owls called a timeout. Florida Atlantic battled back within one at 20-19 before eventually tying up the opening frame at 22 all after a kill from
Maggie Allred. But the Seminoles outscored the Owls 3-1 to close out the set as Florida State took the opening frame, 25-23.
The Owls battled back-and-forth with the Seminoles to open set two, eventually holding a 7-6 advantage. Florida State responded on a 7-3 run to lead 14-9 to spark a Florida Atlantic timeout. The Owls strugged to find an answer to the Seminoles in the second as Florida State closed the frame on an 11-5 run to take the set 25-14 and hold a two-set advantage.
Florida Atlantic opened the third on a 5-2 run, however, the Seminoles scored four straight to take their first lead of the third, 6-5. After battling through three ties, the Owls produced a 4-0 to lead 11-8. Florida Atlantic maintained a two-point advantage, 15-13, through the third-set media timeout. The Owls continued to lead the Seminoles 21-19 after a kill from
Katelynn Robine, but the Owls struggled to keep Florida State at bay as the Seminoles rallied to outscore the Owls 7-3 and take the final set 26-24.
Florida Atlantic will close out the Seminole Classic on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 1:30 p.m. against UCF.
