BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic volleyball closed out play in the Seminole Classic on Saturday, falling in a five-set battle against the UCF Knights in Tallahassee.
The Owls drop to 5-4 and UCF moves to 5-0 after Saturday's match.
After battling through a 5-5 tie to open the contest, UCF scored four unanswered to spark a Florida Atlantic timeout. Florida Atlantic battled back to tie up the match at 10-10 after a kill from
Katelynn Robine. UCF went on a 6-3 run to spark another Florida Atlantic timeout, 16-13. The Owls came out of the break to score five unanswered and take an 18-16 lead. The Knights evened it up 18-18, but the Owls closed the frame on a 7-2 run to take the opening lead, 25-20.
UCF went on a 9-5 run to open the second, but the Owls scored four unanswered to even the frame up at nine and spark a UCF timeout. The squads battled back-and-forth, but the Owls took an 18-17 lead before UCF needed some time. The Knights evened the set up at 18, but another late set rally from the Owls gave Florida Atlantic the 25-21 set victory and a two-set advantage, 2-0.
UCF held a 13-12 advantage in the third before a 4-0 Florida Atlantic run sparked a UCF timeout as the Owls led by three, 16-13. Florida Atlantic closed within one at 21-20, but UCF closed the third on a 4-2 run to take the third, 25-22.
The Owls and Knights battled back and forth through a 15-14 UCF advantage at the third-set media timeout. The Owls tied things up at 15, but UCF scored three unanswered to take an 18-15 lead. UCF went on a 6-5 run to hold set point at 24-20. The Owls tried to rally late, scoring three unanswered to battle back within one, 24-23, but UCF tallied the final point to take the set 25-23 and force a decisive fifth set.
Florida Atlantic opened the fifth on a 4-3 run, but the Knights responded on a 9-1 run to hold a 12-5 lead. The Owls battled back on a 5-2 run to cut the deficit to four, 14-10, but the Knights tallied the final kill to close out the fifth, 15-10, and take the five-set battle, 3-2.
- Valeria Rosado and Katelynn Robine led the Owls offensively with 15 kills apiece, hitting .319 and .313, respectively.
- Rosado also led the Owls' back row, recording a team-leading 15 digs, followed by Brianna Anderson with a team second-best 11 digs
- Victoria Hensley led the Owls in assists, dishing out a team-leading 46 assists
- At the net, Kaila Ru tallied a career-best 10 blocks in the win
The Owls return home next weekend as they host the Owls Paradise Classic on Friday & Saturday, Sept. 20-21.
