Growing up in Puerto Rico, football became my passion at a young age. In 2017, when Hurricane Maria struck the island, my life changed forever. My school shut down for three months, and I knew there were no recruiting opportunities in Puerto Rico. So, I left everything behind at the age of 16 and moved to Miami. Now, going into my sixth year with Florida Atlantic football and a growing program, change has been both challenging and rewarding as I continue to learn how to adapt to new situations and evolve as a player.
Off the field, I am going into my fourth year as president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), helping to raise mental health awareness among athletes and contributing to the community. Through this experience, I have built skills in leadership, communication and adaptability that I have transferred to the field and my position of offensive lineman.
My journey would not be possible without the consistent love and support of my family and the family I have built within this team. Courtney Lamas-Lanier and Andre Lamas are my backbone and have made this place feel like a home, welcoming me into their family with open arms and making me feel like one of their brothers.
As I look forward to this upcoming season, I have the motivation to continue to work hard and take risks.
My mother always said,
“Why shoot for the stars when there are footprints on the moon?”
This saying goes hand in hand with what the head strength coach, Joey Guarascio, tells our team:
“You shoot for a star, and if you come up short, you will land on a mountain.”
I will continue to work hard because with constant hard work and dedication, I will develop into the best player I can be.
My name is Federico Maranges, starting center for Florida Atlantic University.
