Owls Fall in Seesaw Battle with Omaha
8/25/2024 10:48:00 PM | Men's Soccer
OMAHA, Neb. – Florida Atlantic men's soccer (0-1-1) concluded its season-opening road trip with a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Omaha (2-0) on Sunday night.
The Owls struck first in the 13th minute. Sebastian Zettl fired a bullet from nearly 30 yards out that beat the keeper just under the crossbar. It was the Owls' first goal of the season and the second of Zettl's career.
Omaha tied it in the 33rd minute on a penalty kick after an FAU foul inside the box. The match went into halftime all square at 1-1.
It remained deadlocked until Zettl delivered again in the 70th minute. This time, an Owls' cross into the box was deflected away but right into the path of the FAU captain. Zettl took one touch and again hit the top corner, giving the Mavericks' keeper no chance.
The Owls' lead would be short-lived this time, however. Omaha tied the game again in the 80th minute on a free kick from just outside the box. They took their first lead of the night two minutes later and would not relinquish it.
The final shot count favored UNO by a 17-12 margin. The Owls posted seven attempts on goal compared to 10 for the Mavericks. Goalkeeper Nacho Alfaro finished with seven saves. Zettl had four shot attempts for the Owls, with three on target.
FAU men's soccer will now set its sights on the home opener scheduled for Thursday at 6 p.m. versus Stetson. Admission is free for all games at the FAU Soccer Stadium.
