BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic Owls secured another road win, earning a four-set victory, 3-1 (22-25, 25-22, 26-24, 25-15) against the North Texas Mean Green on Friday in Denton, Texas.
The Owls improve to 15-10 overall and 7-6 in AAC play, while North Texas falls to 8-16 on the season and 5-8 in conference play.
Following a 3-0 Florida Atlantic run to open the contest, the Mean Green went on a 15-8 run to lead 15-11 at the opening media timeout. Out of the timeout, the Owls scored three unanswered to battle back within one, 15-14. Florida Atlantic called its second timeout of the opening frame, trailing 22-18. The Owls tried to rally, outscoring the Mean Green 4-2 to cut the deficit back down to two, 24-22, but North Texas blocked the Owls' attack to close out the set as the Mean Green took the opening 1-0 lead.
The Owls opened the second on a 10-6 run to spark an early North Texas timeout. The Mean Green then went on a 7-3 run to even up the set at 13-13, however, the Owls answered back, scoring three unanswered to push the lead back out to 16-13, sparking another North Texas timeout. The Mean Green evened the set at 16-16 and 17-17, but the Owls were hot down the stretch, outscoring North Texas 8-5 to close out the set, 25-22, and even the match at one apiece, 1-1.
North Texas opened the third on a 4-0 run. Florida Atlantic answered back with a 5-1 run of their own to even the frame at five, 5-5, but another 4-0 North Texas run sparked Florida Atlantic's first timeout of the third, 9-5. The Owls battled back and forth with the Mean Green, slowly closing the gap to eventually tie things up at 16. North Texas held a 21-18 advantage, before a 3-0 Owl run tied up the set again at 21-21. The Mean Green scored three unanswered to hold set point at 24-21, but a kill from
Kaila Ru helped to spark a 5-0 Florida Atlantic run, which was eventually capped off by a kill from
Valeria Rosado to clinch the 26-24 set win for the Owls.
Florida Atlantic came out hot in the fourth, opening the set on a 6-1 run, and sparking an early North Texas timeout. The Mean Green battled back, going on an 11-6 run to eventually tie up the fourth 12-12. Following a pair of points for the Owls, the Mean Green got one back to cut the deficit to one at 14-13, however, a huge 9-0 Florida Atlantic run pushed the Owls to a double-digit lead, 23-13. The damage had already been done as the two teams traded points before a
Victoria Hensley killed closed out the match, clinching the Owls 3-1 victory, 25-15.
- Katelynn Robine surpassed 1,000 career kills with her ninth kill in the third set, finishing with 14 kills and hitting an impressive .464, adding three digs and two blocks.
- Valeria Rosado recorded her 11th double-double of the season, leading the Owls offensively with a match-high 20 kills to go along with 10 digs, in addition to three blocks and three service aces.
- Victoria Hensley dished out a match-high 54 assists and added six digs, three kills, and three blocks.
- Romina Cornelio led the Owls back row, tying a career-best 18 digs.
- Madison Dyer tallied a match-high six blocks in the win.
The Owls will wrap up their regular season road slate on Sunday, Nov. 10 as they head to San Antonio, Texas to take on the UTSA Roadrunners. First serve is set for 1 p.m. ET.
