BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic Owls closed out their regular season road slate on Sunday, falling in three sets, 3-0 (19-25, 21-25, 19-25) on the road against the UTSA Roadrunners inside the Convocation Center.
The Owls fall to 15-11 overall and 7-7 in AAC play, while UTSA moves to 9-18 on the season and 3-11 in conference play.
Florida Atlantic opened the match on a 4-1 run to take the early lead. The Roadrunners scored five unanswered to take the lead 6-4, but a kill from
Madison Dyer and a UTSA attack error brought things back even at six. UTSA retook the lead 8-6, but a 5-0 Florida Atlantic run, capped off by a service ace from
Valeria Rosado, put the Owls back in front by three, 11-8. The set remained even at 13-13 before UTSA went on an 8-1 run to hold a 21-14 advantage. The Owls tried to battle back, closing back within four at 21-17 and sparking a UTSA timeout, but it just wasn't enough as the Roadrunners eventually took the opening frame, 25-19.
UTSA scored four unanswered to open the second, but the Owls battled back, going on an 11-6 run to take the lead, 11-10, and spark a Roadrunner timeout. UTSA then went on a 7-3 run to retake the lead 17-14, sparking an Owl timeout.
Kayla Richardson got a kill out of the timeout, but a Roadrunner kill and a Florida Atlantic attack error gave UTSA a 19-15 advantage as the Owls called their second timeout of the set. Florida Atlantic rallied off a 5-3 run to cut the deficit down to two, 22-20, but the Roadrunners outscored the Owls the rest of the way, closing the set on a 3-1 run to take the second, 25-21, and hold the two-set advantage, 2-0.
The Owls and Roadrunners battled back and forth to open the third, battling to a 9-9 tie, however, UTSA then went on a 5-0 run to spark a pair of Florida Atlantic timeouts as the Roadrunners led 14-9. The Roadrunners extended their lead to seven, 17-10, but a 4-1 Florida Atlantic run cut the deficit down to four as the Roadrunners called their first timeout of the third, 18-14.
Katelynn Robine got the kill out of the timeout to bring the set within three for the Owls, 18-15, but Florida Atlantic just couldn't find an answer to the Roadrunners as they outscored the Owls 7-4 over the remainder of the set to take the third, 25-19, and close out the three-set match.
The Owls now get set to wrap up regular season play this weekend as they host the UAB Blazers on Nov. 15 and the Tulane Green Wave on Nov. 17 for senior weekend.
