BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic volleyball started strong but fell in a four-set battle on Friday against the UAB Blazers, 3-1 (25-23, 24-26, 24-26, 16-25) at Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena.
The Owls fall to 15-12 overall and 7-8 in AAC play, while UAB moves to 11-15 on the season and 6-9 in league play.
UAB took the early lead, opening the match on a 5-2 run, but the Owls answered back, scoring three unanswered, tying up the set at 5-5 following a Robine service ace. The Owls battled the Blazers through six ties through an 11-11 stalemate, before going on a 5-0 run to lead 16-11. Florida Atlantic continued to maintain a five-point advantage through a pair of UAB timeouts at 18-13 and 20-15. The Blazers started to rally, going on an 8-4 run to cut the deficit down to one, but
Katelynn Robine closed out the set on a kill to give the Owls the 25-23 win and a 1-0 advantage.
The Owls led 5-4 to open the second, but a 5-0 UAB run sparked an early Florida Atlantic timeout, 10-6. Florida Atlantic kept things within four through a 16-12 deficit before committing a service error and calling their second timeout of the set, trailing by five, 17-12. The Owls regrouped out of the timeout, rallying to outscore the Blazers 7-2 and even things up at 19. UAB retook the lead, holding a 22-20 advantage, before another rally from the Owls evened the set at 23-23 after a kill from Robine and an ace from
Victoria Hensley. Robine recorded another ace to even the set once more at 24-24, but back-to-back Blazer kills closed out the set as UAB evened the match at one apiece, 26-24.
UAB opened the third on a 12-4 run to spark a Florida Atlantic timeout. The Owls started chipping away at the deficit, going on a huge 20-12 run, to slowly chip away at the deficit and tie up the third at 24-24. Florida Atlantic just couldn't close out the rally as a Blazer kill and an Owl attack error eventually closed the set, 26-24, as the Blazers took a 2-1 lead.
Florida Atlantic opened the fourth on a 2-1 run, before UAB scored four unanswered to retake the lead, 5-2. The Owls closed within one at 9-8, but UAB responded by scoring seven unanswered to kick out the deficit to eight, 16-8. Florida Atlantic closed the gap to seven at 22-15, but it just wasn't enough as the Blazers closed the set on a 3-1 run to eventually close out the match, 25-16, and take the four-set win.
- Katelynn Robine led the Owls with 16 kills, while Romina Cornelio also registered double-figures with 10 kills in the match. Robine also tied for a match-high three service aces against the Blazers.
- Victoria Hensley dished out a team-high 42 assists.
- Isabelle Northam tallied a team-high 12 digs in the match, while Kaila Ru finished with a team-leading six blocks.
The Owls will wrap up the regular season on Sunday as they take on the Tulane Green Wave for senior day. First serve is set for 1 p.m. inside Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena and on ESPN+.
