Davis Named to Wooden Award Midseason Watch List

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Junior guard Johnell Davis of the No. 24 Florida Atlantic University men's basketball team (11-4) continues to rack up honors in the midst of a strong start to the 2023-24 campaign.Â

Davis has been named to the Midseason Top 25 Watch List for the 2024 John R. Wooden Award Men's Player of the Year presented by Principal, as announced by the Los Angeles Athletic Club on ESPN2, Wednesday evening.

The Wooden Award is given annually to the top player in college basketball following the conclusion NCAA Tournament in April. Prior to the tournament, a national ballot of 15 players will be released.

For Davis, he has impressed on both sides of the court averaging a career-high 16.8 points per game, 6.9 rebounds, and 1.9 steals on 49% shooting from the field and 44% from downtown.

Since the calendar turned to December, Davis' game has reached new heights. Over the past eight games, he is averaging 20.9 points per game, 7.1 rebounds per game, and 2.1 steals per game. His most memorable moment of the season came on the Owls' double overtime thriller against No. 4 Arizona on Dec. 23, where Davis dropped 35 points, nine rebounds, and three steals to lead the team to a 96-95 victory. For his performance, Davis earned AP National Player of the Week, AAC Player of the Week, and was one of the five recipients for Oscar Robertson Player of the Week.

Over the course of the season, Davis also became the 16th Owl to record 1,000 career points (now at 1,065) and just the third to do so while also nabbing 500 career rebounds (now at 509).
