MIAMI – Florida Atlantic baseball dropped the series finale to FIU 16-2 in seven innings on Saturday night.
Â
FIU managed just one hit in the first inning but came away with two runs. With three walks and one hit by pitch, the Panthers jumped out to an early lead. The Owls cut the deficit in half in the third inning.
Armando Albert and
Nolan Schanuel each doubled, and
Jackson Ross earned the RBI with a sacrifice fly.
Â
FIU scored one in the bottom of the ensuing frame and then batted around in the fifth, tacking on four more. Where it really unraveled for the Owls though was in the sixth. After three straight one-out singles,
C.J. Williams induced a fly out for the second out before a walk, a double, and a single made it an 11-2 game.
Â
Dawson Ball relieved Williams and conceded an RBI single followed by back-to-back home runs. Now facing a 16-2 deficit, the Owls needed five runs in the top of the seventh to keep the game going and avoid the run-rule. They went one, two, three and the game ended early.
Â
- Dylan Oborne started and recorded one out in the first before giving way to Brandon Smith.
- Smith allowed just one unearned run in 2.2 innings.
- Bryan Boully preceded Williams in the fourth and was touched up for three runs without an out on the books.
- Williams allowed two hits in the fourth before retiring the Panthers in order in the fifth.
- Schanuel and Albert combined for four of the Owls' six hits
- Schanuel reached base successfully for the 28th straight game.
- Albert scored both of FAU's runs.
The Owls will look to bounce back on Tuesday at Florida Gulf Coast. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
