BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic University football will host the 2023 Spring Game this Saturday at FAU Stadium. The Owls are slated to take the field at Noon and will begin the scrimmage or game portion at approximately 12:30.
The Owls will be broken into two teams, holding to a true game format for the first half, and will be guided by both full-time coaches as well as celebrity coaches.
On Thursday, FAU held a normally scheduled practice working in full pads and moving through traditional paces. BJ Alexander had the highlight play of the day climbing the ladder for tightly contested touchdown reception. The Owls will hold a rare Friday practice, which is a makeup date that was missed due to weather.
QUOTABLE
Running Backs Coach Chris Perkins On the Tri-County Take Over and its importance
"Coach [Tom] Herman and this staff are developing relationships with Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach County coaches and with the kids as well. We are letting them know that we are right here and that they are always welcomed. This is a great program. Coach Herman is doing a great job of building the program up."
On the running backs supporting a new quarterback
"From the running back position, I put a lot of emphasis on teaching them the game from the quarterback perspective as well. They have to come to the line of scrimmage as a running back and identify the front, understand what the defense is trying to do, and understand certain pressures. Again, I want them to be on the same page. We have to be on the same page as the quarterback and the offensive line. I told them, today, 'this position is tough because we are an extension of the quarterback, of the offensive line and in the passing game as well and then we still have to run the football.' I think us understanding what the quarterback is looking for, what is his check, what his read, what's the protection, being on the same page as the offensive line is very key for us to be productive."
Senior Running Back Larry McCammon III On 2023 Spring Practice
"It has been better, collectively. Better chemistry overall. It has been very hard. They have been pushing us both on and off the field. I'm looking forward to the season.
Competitive Practice
"For our room (running back room), we want to be the room that sets the tone. The most dependable."
On being more involved in the pass game
"Yes, I think using us more in the pass game will help the QBs out a little bit more and then open up opportunities down the way."
Redshirt Sophomore Running Back Zuberi Mobley
On 2023 Spring Practice
"It has been great. Getting to know the guys. The coaches are great. The atmosphere is great. I love it this year."
Competitive Practice
"It pushes all of us. The next guy goes hard. We go even harder. It just pushes everybody."
On being more involved in the pass game
"It will open up the playbook a lot more and help get guys open."
Graduate Student Running Back Kobe Lewis On transitioning to south Florida and being a little warmer than what he is used to
"It is a lot warmer than what I'm used to. I'm like Larry [McCammon]; it is my last spring and on top of that, I haven't participated in a Spring practice in a few years. I'm enjoying every bit of it.
On the Spring thus far and Spring Game
"I'm definitely excited with what I have seen. I think we have a good team so I'm excited to get out there on Saturday and show the fans what we have and what they can expect when the season comes. We have a lot of guys that can make plays, both offense and defense. At this point, it is more of can we put it together and get out there and compete. It will be competitive and a good day."
