BOCA RATON, Fla. – The NFL completed their conference championships this past Sunday, with two former Florida Atlantic Owls seeing the field in hopes of bringing their team to the Super Bowl. Here's a rundown of how both performed during the 2023 NFL Conference Championships
#51 Azeez Al-Shaair | LB | San Francisco 49ers
- Al-Shaair's season came to an end with San Francisco losing to the Philadelphia Eagles by a score of 31-7. He made the start, his 10th straight, and played 17 total snaps. A bulk of them came in the team's opening defensive drive when usual middle linebacker Fred Warner briefly left the game due to injury, giving Al-Shaair the opportunity to man the middle for multiple plays. Al-Shaair made two tackles on the day. He ends his 2022 season coming back strong from an injury early on, with 43 tackles in 12 games and nine starts, 1 tackle for loss, and a takeaway.
#91 Trey Hendrickson | DE | Cincinnati Bengals
- Hendrickson and Cincinnati's bid for a second straight Super Bowl appearance came up just short against the Kansas City Chiefs by a score of 23-20. It was Hendrickson's most active day since Week 14, playing 59% of the team's defensive snaps and made two tackles. He ends the season with 15 games played and started, eight sacks, three pass deflections and forced fumbles, 24 QB hits, and multiple honors including the Week 3 AFC Defensive Player of the Week and a Pro Bowl selection.
In total, 10 former Florida Atlantic Owls saw the field in an NFL game during the 2022 season. They played a combined 125 games with 64 starts and were highlighted by a second straight Pro Bowl selection by Hendrickson.
