FAU closes non-conference play at FGCU Invitational

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Florida Atlantic University volleyball closes out tournament play this weekend, as the Owls head to Fort Myers to compete in the FGCU Invitational on Sept. 16-17 at Alico Arena.
The Owls (8-1) open play on Friday, Sept. 16 against St. Francis Brooklyn with a 4 p.m. first serve. FAU will continue play on Saturday, Sept. 17 as the Owls take on Buffalo at 1 p.m., before playing their FGCU Invitational finale against host FGCU at 7 p.m.

Scouting FAU
- The Owls (8-1) are off to their best start since 2005, which saw FAU win 15-straight games to start the season.
- Valeria Rosado was named Dolphin Classic MVP after having a phenomenal weekend and helping lead the Owls to perfect 3-0 record in Jacksonville. Lauryn Green and Camryn Vogler also received Dolphin Classic All-Tournament team honors for their impressive play in Jacksonville.
- Sophomore duo Rosado and Katelynn Robine have led the Owls offensively this season, posting 110 kills (3.67 per set) and 75 kills (3.41 per set) each, respectively. Robine and Rosado also lead the Owls at the service line, with Robine leading the Owls with 13 service aces and Rosado falling just behind with 12 services aces.
- Noelle Stephens has dished out a team-leading 299 assists so far this season, averaging 9.97 per set.
- Defensively, Camryn Vogler has tallied a team-high 101 digs (3.37 per set), while Rosado has posted 81 digs (2.70 per set) in 2022.
- At the net, Lauryn Green has recorded a team-high 22 blocks, including a team-best nine solo blocks.
Last Time Out: Dolphin Classic
- The Owls are coming off a perfect 3-0 weekend in Jacksonville at the Dolphin Classic. FAU opened the weekend on Friday, earning a sweep against Idaho, before closing out play on the opening day with a four-set win over the Tarleton State Texans. The Owls then faced host Jacksonville in Saturday's finale, defeating the Dolphins in four after falling just short in the opening set.
Scouting Buffalo
- Buffalo enters the FGCU Invitational with a 7-2 record and is coming off the WNY Invite, which saw the Bulls finish 3-0 to win the tournament Invite title.
- The Bulls are led by Scott Smith, who has coached Buffalo to a 37-54 record in his four seasons at the helm.
- Buffalo is led offensively by Katrin Trebichavska, who leads the Bulls with 99 kills (3.19 per set), while also posting a team-best 124 points, as well as leading the team at the service line with 21 aces so far this season.
- Mandy Leigh leads the Bulls in assists, dishing out a team-best 340 (10.63 per set).
- Defensively, Buffalo is led by Hayley Montoya with a team-best 104 digs (3.06 per set), while Abby Leigh has posted a team-best 41 blocks, including 17 solo blocks.
- Saturday marks the first ever meeting between the Owls and the Bulls
Scouting FGCU
- FGCU enters their home tournament with a 7-3 overall record and is coming off a midweek matchup at FIU, where the Eagles earned a 3-0 sweep over the Panthers.
- The Eagles are led by Matt Botsford, who has led FGCU to a 191-62 record in his nine seasons as head coach in Fort Myers.
- Erin Shomaker leads the Eagles with a team-high 134 kills (3.83 per set) and 154 points (4.40 per set).
- Chelsey Lockey has dished out a team-leading 358 assists (10.23 per set), as well as posting a team-best 18 service aces this season.
- Defensively, Dana Axner has collected a team-high 136 digs (3.89 per set), while Skylar English has led the Eagles at the net, posting a team-best 24 blocks.
- The overall series between the Owls and Eagles is tied up 6-6, however FGCU leads all-time at Alico Arena, 4-1.
Scouting St. Francis Brooklyn
- St. Francis Brooklyn enters the FGCU Invitational with a 6-6 record, and the Terriers are coming off a midweek matchup that saw St. Francis Brooklyn earn a 3-0 sweep over NJIT.
- The Terriers are coached by Amable Martinez, who has led the Terriers to a 29-45 overall record over his four seasons as head coach.
- St. Francis Brooklyn is led offensively by Camelia Melendez, who has tallied a team-best 130 kills (3.51 per set), 151.5 points (4.09 per set), and 16 service aces so far in 2022.
- Moniaca Vargo and Selina Koc lead the Terriers in assists, posting a team-best 189 (6.30 per set) and 142 (6.45 per set), respectively.
- Alasha Colon leads St. Francis Brooklyn in digs, recording a team-best 174 digs (4.14 per set).
- At the net, Cristal Paulino and Elaina Vaughan leads the Terriers in blocks, recording 35 and 33 blocks each, respectively.
- Friday marks the first ever meeting between FAU and St. Francis Brooklyn
