JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Florida Atlantic University volleyball earned a four-set victory against Dolphin Classic host Jacksonville to earn the Owls sixth-straight win and claim the Dolphin Classic championship on Saturday at Swisher Gymnasium.
The Owls battled early as
Noelle Stephens knocked down her first kill of the contest to bring the Owls even with the Dolphins at 4-4. However, Jacksonville retook the lead on a 5-0 run to make it 9-4 and spark the Owls to call a timeout. FAU regrouped and refocused following the timeout, outscoring the Dolphins 7-2, capped
Valeria Rosado's first kill of the contest to bring the Owls even at 11. Jacksonville retook the lead, and the Owls kept the opening frame within two at 17-15, but the Dolphins outscored the Owls down the stretch to take the set 25-21 and the 1-0 lead.
The Owls bounced back in a big way in set two. FAU came out on fire with
Klara Zarnovicka and
Alicia Hearn combining for the Owls first block of the contests to give FAU the 6-2 lead early. The Owls continued to pressure the Dolphins as FAU extended its lead to five, 9-4, before Jacksonville called a timeout. FAU went on another run, outscoring Jacksonville 5-3 to push the Owls lead to 14-7 following an
Arianna Beckham kill to spark the Dolphins second timeout of set two. Jacksonville just couldn't find an answer to the Owls as FAU continued to outscore the Dolphins 11-7 over the remainder of the set to even the contest at 1-1.
Jacksonville jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead in the third. The Owls battled back to get within one, 7-6. The Dolphins kicked their lead back out to four at 16-12, before the Owls scored three straight concluded by a
MiaBella English service ace and a Dolphin error to bring the Owls once again back within a point, 16-15. Still trailing 22-20, the Owls scored three more unanswered with a
Lauryn Green kill gave the Owls the 23-22 advantage. Back-to-back kills from Rosado and
Arianna Beckham closed the set and gave the Owls the 2-1 lead.
Like the third set, the Owls fell down early falling behind by three to open the set, 5-2. However, the Owls really got things going following a Dolphin attack error to score six unanswered and take their first lead of the fourth 8-5. The Owls maintained a two-point advantage through 15-13, before breaking away to lead by five, 20-15, late in the fourth. Jacksonville rallied to outscore the Owls 9-4 to even the match at 24. The Owls didn't break however, holding set-point at 25, 26, and 27, before Beckham and
Camryn Vogler combined for back-to-back kills to claim the hard-fought 29-27 set and the Owls' 3-1 win.

The Owls will close out non-conference play next week as they head to Fort Myers to compete in the FGCU Invitational on Sept. 16-17 at Alico Arena.
