BOCA RATON, Fla. – Looking to continue the Owls' upward trend, Florida Atlantic University volleyball head coach
Fernanda Nelson announced the program's 2022 schedule on Wednesday, featuring 13 home matches at Abessinio Court at FAU Arena and three matches against 2021 NCAA Tournament teams.
The 2022 season also marks the 11
th for coach Nelson with the Owls.
"I feel like we have an extremely talented group of volleyball athletes in the gym this year," said coach Nelson. "But what makes me most excited about this group is their exceptional character and hunger to improve every day. I am really looking forward to entering my 11th season at FAU. I've been so blessed to have a wonderful staff around me and all the support from my administration throughout my time at FAU."
The Owls will compete in 12 non-conference matchups, including a pair of season-opening home tournaments in the FAU Invitational and the Owls Paradise Classic, in addition to two road tournaments with the Dolphin Classic and the FGCU Invitational, and 14 Conference USA contests.
Before officially opening the 2022 season, the Owls will host Lynn for an exhibition contest on Saturday, Aug. 20.
The 2022 season will then kick off on Aug. 26-27 as the Owls host the first of two home tournaments with the FAU Invitational, welcoming Alabama A&M, Mercer, and Lehigh. The Owls will then close out their six-match homestand on Sept. 2-3 as they host the Owls Paradise Classic, taking on Alcorn, Stetson, and Arkansas Pine Bluff.
FAU will hit the road for the first time in 2022, as the Owls travel to Jacksonville for the Dolphin Classic to battle head-to-head with Idaho, Tarleton State, and host Jacksonville on Sept. 6-7. After their trip to Jacksonville, the Owls will remain in the Sunshine State to close out their non-conference slate on Sept. 16-17 as they compete in the FGCU Invitational in Fort Myers, taking on St. Francis Brooklyn, Buffalo, and host FGCU.
FAU will then host North Texas on Sept. 23 and UTEP on Sept. 25 for back-to-back home contests to open their C-USA schedule. The Owls then close out the month of September on the road, taking on UTSA on Sept. 30 for their first C-USA road contest of the season in San Antonio, Texas.
The Owls remain in the Lone Star State to begin October, playing Rice on Oct. 2, before closing out their three-game road stretch in Charlotte, North Carolina as the Owls take on Charlotte on Oct. 7. The Owls will then return to FAU Arena for a pair of home contests, welcoming UAB and Middle Tennessee on Oct. 9 and Oct. 14, respectively. FAU volleyball then hits the road for its second C-USA road trip of the 2022 season, heading to Louisiana for a battle with LA Tech, before beginning their trek back east with a stop in Birmingham, Alabama for a road showdown against UAB on Oct. 23. The Owls then return home on Oct. 28 for their first of two rivalry matches against FIU. FAU volleyball then closes out October in the Volunteer State as they take on Middle Tennessee for their second matchup of the season on October 30.
To open November, the Owls will return to Boca Raton for their final homestand of the regular season, hosting WKU on Nov. 4 and Charlotte for senior day on Nov. 6. FAU will close out the 2022 regular season on the road as the Owls head south to face FIU on Nov. 12.
WKU will host the C-USA Tournament in Bowling Green, Kentucky, beginning Nov. 18 and concluding Nov. 20.
"We feel like we have a competitive schedule that will prepare us well for our final season in C-USA," coach Nelson said.
