BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University football team returned to work Wednesday morning, and like most practices, the Owls worked on competition, both for positions and to win each drill. Post practice, the Owls will work on film review, building team chemistry and team unity as they delve more into the "game" of football.
QUOTABLE
Defensive Coordinator Todd Orlando On preseason camp
"I think first off, (Head Strength and Conditioning Coach) Joey (Gurasico) has done a great job with our guys…There's a noticeable difference in the way that we're running and the power that we have. We're starting to see some guys get back into the fold. We have some consistency, but we also have some new parts that we brought in that are trying to learn the system, but they've been doing a really good job. The thing I'm proud about is every day so far, we've been united. We've been talking about that like crazy. We're going to work for each other, run the ball for each other, and it's been consistent, so I'm really happy with that."
On building unity and embracing each other through three questions
"We ask them 'who's the most influential person in your life', 'what is the best moment of their life' and 'what was the hardest thing they ever had to go through and how did they get through it'? We ask those three questions to them, and they have to answer it in front of the whole unit. It's really good because the coaches go up there and do the same exact thing, so they get a chance to learn a little bit more and really what a lot of people have gone through."
Redshirt Sophomore Linebacker Jamie Pettway: On how his first camp with FAU is going
"Camp is going pretty well. I believe the defense is making tremendous progress. The three things we are focused on right now is effort, toughness, and being united as a group…My biggest thing is being consistent, making sure I bring the same energy every day, trying to get one percent better and trying to lead the guys by example, not just talk about it."
On uniting as a team
"We're doing this thing every night where we answer three questions. One of the questions is 'who is most important to you', another one is 'what is the best time of your life' and another one is 'what is one of the hardest things you have had to go through and how did you get through it?' And most of the guys, that last question when they ask, 'how did you get through it?' it's because of football. We're trying to use that and motivate each other and that we have each other and it's a brotherhood and you can come to anyone of us at any time."
Junior Running Back Larry McCammon III: On how camp is going:
"It's been pretty good so far. We're trying to improve more as an offense. We have a chip on our shoulder right now."
On the running back competition:
"We have a lot of good backs out there right now, so we're just going to keep competing, keep pushing each other and trying to be great every day."
On new OC Brent Dearmon:
"We're from the same state. He's a pretty tough guy. He reminds me of my head coach from high school. He's a good dude and an offensive guru, so we put our trust in him. He's going to put us in the right positions to make plays."

PLAY OF THE DAY
ON THE FIELD
Individual drills were competitive pitting the sides of the ball against each other
Redshirt freshman safety Josh Moore proved to be the offensive foil grabbing an endzone interception during the same drill
The defensive unit worked together to wrap up a running back allowing inside linebacker Jarrett Jerrels to strip the ball and record a return
Seven-on-seven ended with high praise for Perry's pass selection and a second pass by Perry that was intended for Javion Posey, but was deflected into the hands of Wester for the score
The following session saw the offense work on gaining positive yards when backed up near their own goal line, and the first play saw the offensive line open huge holes for Larry McCammon to move the chains
The second team defensive unit earned a stop and the period ended with Willie Taggart, Jr. finding Posey for a score
The next team drill focused on situations. Wyatt Sullivan had a nice diving catch in the open field, and Ja'Marquis Johnson ended the drill with an interception
FAU then began red zone work rotating through the first team, second team, third team, etc. and the Owls' offense was successful seven times, while the defense tallied six stops
