FAU Dominates Detroit Mercy for First Win
8/21/2022 3:25:00 PM | Women's Soccer
BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Florida Atlantic University women's soccer team earned its first win of the 2022 season with a decisive and dominant 4-0 tally over Detroit Mercy on Sunday.Â
Â
All four Owl goals came in the first half. In the 12th minute, Bri Austin made a strong move to get space after taking a pass from Hailey Landrus. Austin fired a rocket shot from the left side of the box that tucked inside the right post for FAU's first goal of the season.
Â
That same combination connected again less than six minutes later. From the left side, Landrus sent in a cross that Austin got a piece of inside the goalie's box, and it found the back of the net for a 2-0 lead.
Â
FAU kept the foot on the gas pedal and stretched it to a 4-0 lead by halftime with two goals from Sofia Voldby. Voldby punched in a header after a cross from Hunter Koziara for her first goal in the 33rd minute, then struck again in the 43rd after taking a feed from Thelma Hermannsdottir. The two goals were Voldby's first of her collegiate career.
Â
The 4-0 lead proved to be more than enough for the Owl defense, which did not allow a single shot to Detroit Mercy. Blythe Braun picked up the shutout in her first Owl start.

Quotable
"We're really proud of our players," FAU head coach Patrick Baker said. "They responded very well from a tough performance against Alabama, but in fairness Alabama is very good. We talked about putting that in a capsule and learning from it, but not dwelling from it and finishing the weekend on a high note. I thought they did just that. We're really proud of how they responded, and four goals in the first half definitely helped our cause today."Â
Notable
- The two goals for Austin mark her first multi-goal game as an Owl. Austin and Voldby's pair of scores mark the first time an FAU player has scored more than one goal in a game since Miracle Porter tallied three against Grand Canyon on Aug. 25, 2019
- The four goals are the Owls' highest in a single game since the Conference USA Semifinals against Charlotte in 2019
- Landrus, who was celebrating her 22nd birthday today, recorded two assists for her first two-assist game of her career
- FAU dominated the game, out-shooting Detroit Mercy 17-0 with nine shots on goal
- The Owls also held a 6-0 edge in corner kicks
- FAU controlled possession 65% of the match
