BOCA RATON, Fla. – Conference USA announced its Scholar Athlete of the Year recipients for the 2021-22 school year on Monday. A pair of Florida Atlantic University graduate students were named as representatives for their respective sports.
Hunter Cooley earned the honor for baseball while
Christine Jarman was named as the inaugural winner for beach volleyball.
The award is presented to the top student-athlete in each conference-sponsored sport, based on academic achievement (GPA), athletic achievement and service, and voted on by the league's 14 faculty athletic representatives.
Cooley is entering his fifth season at FAU with a long list of accolades already in tow. In April, he was named as the FAU Male Student-Athlete of the Year. The Vero Beach native holds a 3.83 cumulative GPA and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice and Corrections last fall. Currently, Cooley is pursuing his master's degree in criminology. He's earned a spot on the FAU Dean's List (top 3% of college) and President's List (4.0 GPA) twice and in May was named to the Conference USA Honor Roll.
On the field, Cooley was the Owls' regular Friday night starter this past spring. He racked up an 8-4 record in the regular season and led C-USA with 98 innings pitched. Cooley was named as one of the two co-captains at the start of the season. He follows teammate
Mitchell Hartigan who earned the Scholar Athlete of the Year award for baseball in 2021.
Jarman came to FAU as a graduate transfer last fall. After leading the indoor volleyball squad in kills, the former standout at Boca Raton HS made the switch to the sand in the spring. Jarman played a key role in the Owls' journey to the National Championship. She posted an 18-8 record with most of her action coming on court four. In pairs, she teamed with senior
Jillienne Cangelosi to go 16-8.
Off the court, Jarman is highly involved in the FAU community in several different capacities. In addition to serving as a teaching assistant for Professor Deborah Searcy's undergraduate Global Strategy and Policy class, Jarman also interns three days a week with FAU's Paradise Club in Athletics Development under the mentorship of
Michael Graffin,
Alvin Hines II, and
Haiden Nagel. She was also one of 200 student-athletes selected to attend the NCAA Career Sports Forum in Indianapolis in early June.
In the community, Jarman contributed her time and efforts this past year to the Project Thanksgiving Canned Food Drive, Boca Helping Hands, the 4K Kids store, and the 4x4 Rec Beach Volleyball Tournament.
Academically, Jarman is pursuing an MBA in Sport Management where she holds a 3.61 GPA. She earned her undergraduate degree in Public Policy and Leadership from the University of Virginia in 2021.
Both Cooley and Jarman will return next spring for one more season in their respective sports.
