NORFOLK, Va. – The Florida Atlantic University men's tennis team, ranked No. 43 nationally, dispensed of Southern Miss 4-0 in the opening match of the 2022 Conference USA Championship, on Friday morning.
The Owls, holding the tournament's No. 2 seed, made quick work of No. 7 seed USM. The win marks the second time in April that FAU has earned a win over conference foe USM. The Owls previously defeated USM 7-0, in Boca Raton, on April 2.
FAU, which improved to 18-5 on the season, captured doubles' courts one and two to secure the match's first point.
Gerard Escandell won his court five match 6-1, 6-4 and
Carles Sarrio walked off court two moments later with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) win. With four matches still in play,
Nicolas Jadoun clinched the match for the Owls with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-1) win on court four.
The win advances the Owls into the Championship's semifinal match scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday versus No. 3 Charlotte, who defeated No. 6 Rice, on Friday afternoon.
